Biographical Note

Clyde Vern “Butch” Hoffman, Jr., was born on April 10, 1938 in Denver, Colorado to Elsie Bibby and Clyde Vern Hoffman. At some point in his childhood, the Hoffman family moved to Ogden, Utah, where they owned and operated Hoffman Cleaners. Butch Hoffman began skiing as a youth, racing for Ogden High School and competing in Intermountain Division races throughout the western United States. In 1965, he won the giant slalom at the United States National Veterans Alpine Championship. Hoffman taught at the Earl Miller Ski School at Snowbasin, Utah. With his wife, Linda, Butch Hoffman had three children: Scott, Heidi, and Kathy, all three of whom skied competitively. Scott Hoffman was an All-American skier at University of Utah and a member of the United States Ski Team. Heidi Hoffman won the United States Junior Olympic slalom championship at age sixteen and was a four-year All-American skier at Brigham Young University. Kathy Hoffman was an All-American skier at Brigham Young University and national champion during her freshman year. Butch Hoffman died on January 27, 2021.

Butch Hoffman and his family participated in competitive skiing in Utah throughout the twentieth century. The Butch Hoffman Family photograph collection documents Butch Hoffman's children Katie and Scott Hoffman competing in ski events as children in approximately the 1970s.
