The Lucin Cutoff, also known as the Ogden-Lucin Cut-Off, is a 102-mile railroad line running from Ogden to Lucin, Utah. It was originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad to shorten the transcontinentral route. It was taken over by the Union Pacific Railroad, which operates it as part of the Lakeside Subdivision of the Overland Route. The Cutoff was known for its 12 mile railroad trestle that crossed the Great Salt Lake. It was in use from 1904 until the late 1950s.
In 1944, the Lucin Cutoff trestle was the site of a train wreck during which 48 people were killed. On May 4, 1956 a fire did considerable damage, reconstruction occurred over the following days, completed on May 10.
In the late 1950s, an earthen causeway was constructed parallel to the trestle, replacing most of its use; the trestle saw limited use until 1975, and in the 1990s deconstruction of the trestle began. The trestle was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1972 and removed on October 23, 2018.
