Biographical / Historical

Charles Lamont “Monte” Felt (1892-1976) was born on January 31, 1892 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph Henry and Elizabeth Mineer Felt. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Felt served a mission in Germany from 1912 to 1914. Felt worked for the Salt Lake Theater under Maud May Babock before going to work for Utah Power and Light Company in the 1910s. In 1921, Felt founded the Felt Electric Company, one of the largest suppliers of lamps and electrical supplies in Salt Lake City. Through this work, Felt contributed to the development of Salt Lake City’s first traffic semaphore, or automatic traffic light. Felt served as president of the Republican Club of Utah and the Sons of Utah Pioneers. He also served on the Committee for the Restoration of Saltair. Professionally, he was a member of the Intermountain Electrical Association, which gave him their Electric Dealer Award. Monte Felt died on September 14, 1976. (Adapted from “C. Lamont Felt, 84, dies in S.L.,” Deseret News, September 16, 1976.)
