Scope and Contents

The University of Utah Ski Team Collection contains a wide variety of images ranging from the first ski team sponsored by the University of Utah in 1946, to modern digital photographs of skiers competing in downhill (Alpine) and cross-country (Nordic) races. The only prints belonging to the University of Utah collection were taken during the 1940s and 1950s. These prints can be found in folder one. The balance of the collection consists of addenda donated by the University of Utah Ski Director, Pat Miller, in 2001. Folders two through eight consist entirely of digital scans taken from photographs spanning the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s; Pat Miller provided identifications. Many well-known skiers and names are represented in the University of Utah Ski Team Collection. Some of these materials were matched with their corresponding prints in subsequent donations and organized by team or year.

The majority of box two contain materials that were born digital (that is, taken with a digital camera) and sent digitally to the library.

Biographical / Historical

The University of Utah’s ski team began competing in 1936-37 without official support of the University athletic department. Though the team did fairly well, it wasn’t until University funding was received in 1945 that allowed the skiers to participate in intercollegiate competitions. During the 1945-46 season, the Utes ski team secured their first intercollegiate win at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, placing first, second, third, and fourth in the meet. The women’s ski team was also very talented, and took first place sweep at Berthoid Pass, Colorado in 1950. Popularity for the sport continued to grow on campus, and by the mid 50’s the University put its full support behind the ski team. With some of the best ski slopes in the world, it should come as no surprise that the U’s ski team quickly became one of the most competitive in the nation winning many NCAA championships and national championships.
