Biographical / Historical
The Bonneville Speedway is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats that has been used for landspeed racing since the early twentieth century. Seasonal flooding smoothes the salt, and the desert sun bakes it into an exceptionally smooth, flat, and hard surface, ideal for landspeed racing. Creating and maintainging a similar surface using traditional construction methods would be prohibitively expensive for the mostly amatuer, not-for-profit racing that occurs at Bonneville.
The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) is an all-volunteer organization made up of 11 individual landspeed racing clubs, including The Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). The SCTA hosts the annual Bonneville National Speed Week, a salt flats institution since 1948, and the USFRA hosts The World of Speed, started in 1986. The Bonneville Racing News, first published in 1989, reports on these events, as well as other important stories in the landspeed racing community.
The collection is named for the donor of the material, Tom Shannon. Shannon is an active contributor in the landspeed racing community, frequently volunteering his time and energy to further the sport.
