Biographical / Historical

Joseph Hagman Young was born on March 24, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Louise Teckla Hagman and Don Carlos Young, Jr. As a youth, Young developed an interest in electronics and building. Young served in the United States Navy during World War II, where he learned more about electronics. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Young served a mission after leaving the military. While serving in the Great Lakes Mission, Young met and entered a relationship with Frances Jeanne Hunter, a musician who eventually played violin for the Utah Symphony. Joseph H. Young and Frances Jeanne Hunter married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 19, 1952; together, the couple had three children. Missionary work remained an important part of both Frances and Joseph Young’s lives; they served local missions in Salt Lake City and served as Mission Presidents of the Ohio Cleveland Mission in 1979.

Joseph H. Young attended the University of Utah, where he studied architecture. After graduation, he went to work at his father’s architectural firm.
