Nancy Melich photograph collection
Scope and Contents
The Nancy Melich photograph collection consists of 6 boxes containing approximately 1,500 black-and-white and color photographs of Broadway and off Broadway productions and people and Utah theatre productions and people. Most of the Broadway photos are from APN Sunday Illustrations in Rockefeller Plaza, New York. The collection also includes photos from others, such as the Salt Lake Tribune. Most of the photos include a description or short news story relating to the image. Images were largely collected by Melich, not created by her, and may have copyright restrictions.
The colleciton is arranged into three series. Series 1: Broadway and Off Broadway publicity photographs consists of Boxes 1-2. Box 1 contains photos of actors and theaters, arranged alphabetically by last name. Box 2 contains Scenes from Broadway and off Broadway performances and playwrites, composers and directors, both arranged alphabetically. Series II: Utah Theatre consists of boxes 3-5. Box 3 conatins images of actors and productions, mostly in Utah. Box 4 contains images from various Utah theatres. Box 5 contains images from Sundance Film Festival, Salt Lake Community College, several festivals, and various theatre groups and conferences. Series III: Oversize consits of Box 6, which contains one oversized image from Theatre Works West.

Biographical / Historical
Nany Melich grew up on Moab, Utah, and at the age of six, appeared in John Ford's Rio Grande with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, which was filmed in her home town. She attended the University of Utah, where she recieved her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. Nany Melich worked as a reporter and theater critic for the Salt Lake Tribune for nearly thirty years, during which time she also worked as the editor of the Sunday Arts and Entertainment Section. She not only provided helpful criticism to local theater companies and troupes, but she was also a founding member of the Sundace Playwrights Laboratory and the Utah Arts Festival. Melich served as a guest critic for many theatre festivals, as well as the vice-chair on the executive committee of the American Theatre Critics Association.

Nancy Melich was the theatre critic for the Salt Lake Tribune for nearly 30 years. This colleciton contains approximately 1,500 images related to Broadway, off Broadway, and Utah theatre collected by Melich over the course of her career, with the bulk of the images dating from 1980-1999.
