Union Pacific Railroad photograph album

 Collection
Identifier: P2206

Scope and Contents

The Union Pacific Railroad photograph album consists of 1 oversize box containing a brown leather photograph album with 88 sepia toned albumen prints adhered to the paper, interleaved with tissue paper. Many are labeled "copyright by Union Pacific RR 1899, 1900." The location of the photographs, or the purpose for their creation and compilation, is unknown. Many of the photographs are landscapes of scenes likely in the American West, perhaps in southern Utah or southwestern Colorado, and include canyons, rock formations, and mountains. Some of the images include people, perhaps railroad employees, and campsites, wagons, and horses. Several images depict ranches at a distance, and one photograph depicts two women and four children in front of a log structure.

Biographical / Historical

The Union Pacific Railroad was originally founded by the United States federal government in 1862 as part of the first transcontinental project in the United States. In 1874, Jay Gould took control over the Union Pacific. In 1897, all federal control was divested as the property of the Union Pacific Railway was sold to a new corporation, the Union Pacific Railroad. Following the completion of the transcontinental line, the UP purchased or merged with many smaller, regional railroad companies and lines and built routes and branch lines over the course of a century.
