Scope and Contents Woolsey (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. He joined Battery D, 145th Field Artillery of the National Guard when he was fifteen. His unit was called to active duty in January 1941. He was discharged to complete high school, after which he joined the Navy and was trained as an aviation machinist's mate.
