Davern was Professor of cellular, viral, and molecular biology at the University of Utah. He also served as Dean of the Medical School and Academic Vice President of the University of Utah.

The William Wallace Newby papers (1930-1971) consist of personal and professional materials concerning William Newby (1902-1977), a professor of biology at the University of Utah from 1927-1971. Included are biographical information, obituary notices, an oral history transcript, numerous hand drawn and reproduced illustrations, and literature and correspondence pertaining to the Aztec Club, of which Newby was president from 1965-1966.
