Mike M. Masaoka served as National Secretary (1941-1943) and Washington lobbyist (1945-1953) for the Japanese American Citizens' League. He was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II and served as president of the Japan-America Society. The Topaz oral history project collection interviews (1987-1993) were conducted by Sandra Taylor, of the University of Utah's Department of History. The interviews were part of her research for Jewel of the desert: Japanese American internment at Topaz (1993).
