The James Stephens Brown diaries [typescripts] (1849-1892) contain transcriptions of five of James Stephens Brown's journals. These journals cover fragments of more than fourty-six years of his life, primarily those devoted to missionary work in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Great Britain, Tahiti, and to a missionary settlement south and southeast of the Colorado River.

Abstract

The William Clayton diaries and ledger consist of copies of Clayton's 1840-1842 journal, ledger and his 1852-1853 diary. Clayton was prominent in the LDS movement. He was summoned to Joseph Smith's office to assist Willard Richards and subsequently became clerk to Joseph Smith. Later, he followed Brigham Young to the Great Salt Lake Valley and served missions for the his church.

The Lorenzo Hill Hatch journal typescripts (1855-1906) were prepared by Ruth Savage Hilton in 1958 of Hatch's journals. Lorenzo Hill Hatch (1826-1910) was a Mormon missionary, pioneer, and settler. He served as mayor of Lehi, as legislator of Utah and Idaho, and also founded a number of settlements in Arizona.

The Thomas A. Leishman papers (1887-1998) contain his mission diary and various personal and biographical documents. Leishman was born in Scotland and emigrated to Utah in 1852. He helped lay out the city of Wellsville, Utah, and assisted in the construction of every public building in the community. He later served an LDS mission to England and Scotland form 1887 to 1889.

The Mathew Rowan papers [photocopies] (1853-1864) consist of the Rowan family history and a journal, both written by Mathew Rowan while serving a mission in England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rowan began writing the family history, and his journal, shortly after his 1853 marriage to Jane Martin in Worcester, England. Taylor, an LDS bishop, written while serving a prison term in 1886 for polygamy; transcript of a diary recounting his prison experiences, 1886. The diary covers events in Taylor's life such as converting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (LDS), in England, his trip aboard a steamer to New Orleans, his travels from Council Bluffs across the plains to Salt Lake City, and the "Utah War" and the impact of the army at Fort Bridger and Camp Floyd.
