Many are labeled "copyright by Union Pacific RR 1899, 1900." The location of the photographs, or the purpose for their creation and compilation, is unknown. Many of the photographs are landscapes of scenes likely in the American West, perhaps in southern Utah or southwestern Colorado, and include canyons, rock formations, and mountains. Some of the images include people, perhaps railroad employees, and campsites, wagons, and horses. Several images depict ranches at a distance, and one photograph depicts two women and four children in front of a log structure.
