Scope and Contents

The Theodore Ward papers (1938-1951) contain two plays by Ward, Throwback and Big White Fog, and correspondence and drafts associated with these plays. Both plays consider the struggle of African Americans for respect in a dominant white culture. The collection includes four rough drafts and a final copy of Throwback, with a letter from the author to Gail Martin. The final script of Big White Fog is accompanied by correspondence and a review.

Biographical Sketch

Theodore Ward was born on 15 September 1902 in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He began formal literary study at the University of Utah in the 1920s and then studied creative writing at the University of Wisconsin until 1935. Although he never achieved any major literary successes, Ward did receive some popular notice. His plays were known for their controversial subjects, such as anti-Semitism, racism, government politics, etc. Theodore Ward died in 1983.
