The author's great-grandmother Jane Armour emigrated to the United States at age 17 in 1873 and married John William McGillivray, an upstate New York farmer of Scottish descent, in 1875. A daughter of this union, Susie, married French Canadian immigrant George Edward Beaudoin in 1909. Their son Alburn, one of six children, is the author's father.
