John Hardie (1840-1907) was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrated from Scotland as a young man. He participated in the Utah War, worked for the Pony Express, as a coal miner, and engaged in other occupations. He served a mission for his church in the British Isles. The diary covers the time span of his mission.
