Scope Note: Rock Springs massacre of 1885; an attack of the Chinese quarter of a small coal mining town, Rock Springs, Wyo. Terr., on Sept. 2, 1885 by an armed mob of white men; mob killed 28 Chinese, wounded 15, and drove rest of the Chinese population into the hills; estimated that in the following weeks another 50 Chinese died of exposure and starvation; white miners as well as white businessmen wanted to get rid of the Chinese because they posed an economic threat to whites; apparently touched off by a fist fight between white and Chinese miners

Abstract
The George and Susan Matsumura Sunada papers (1935-2001) consist primarily of Susan Sunada's research materials related to Japanese Americans in Utah and the West. George worked as a commercial artist for Sears. Susan was the Foreign Student Advisor for Utah State University, a secretary for Baugh Real Estate, executive secretary to the mayor, and a photo-journalist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Utah.
