Susan was the Foreign Student Advisor for Utah State University, a secretary for Baugh Real Estate, executive secretary to the mayor, and a photo-journalist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Shoichi Yamashiro and Tsuruyo Nakanishi Yamashiro emigrated to Utah from Japan in the early 20th century and raised their five children in Devil's Slide and Kaysville, Utah before the family relocated to California in the 1950s.
